  Writing

You are very good at what you do, whether you sell a product or provide a service.  However, communicating about that product or service, which is a key part of your business plan (or if it's not, it should be!)  might not come so easily.  Good, clear communication is vital to creating the kind of professional image you want to project, which is why it's important to work with a professional.  Writing doesn't come naturally to everyone, but it does to me.

Editing

I'm not a mechanic, so if my car's not working properly, I call in a professional.  A good editor is like that mechanic you trust who can get you back on the road and ensure your safety.  I can tune up your words so they hum along and get your business from point A to point B via the most direct route.  I spot glaring errors in spelling and grammar as I go about my day, whether it's reading a recipe, shopping online or even reading a novel.  These are all mistakes that put a ding in your shiny professional image, but are so easy for me to make sure you avoid.

I offer different types of editing services, and we can come up with the combination that best meets your needs.  This is where my obsession with all things grammatical comes into play.  Here's a breakdown:
  • Substantive Editing is the most time-consuming and thorough type of edit.  I will read your document with an eye toward content, grammar, style, punctuation, spelling, and overall readability.  I will tighten your copy to its leanest and meanest, or expand concepts that aren't quite clear.  I will smooth transitions, reorganize paragraphs and make sure you use a consistent style and point of view throughout.  I will correct the use of passive voice, make sure your subjects and verbs agree and, once and for all, solve those pesky word choice dilemmas like ensure vs. insure or imminent vs. eminent.  Often, a substantive edit will result in a minor to major rewrite of your document.
  • Copy Editing is a little less involved than the substantive edit.  However, I will go over your document with a fine-tooth comb, correcting mistakes in grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, sentence structure and word choice.  Copy editing does not involve rewriting.
  • Proofreading is the final step before releasing a document or printing one that's mass-produced. When proofreading, I assume content, style, grammar and spelling are all accurate (but will flag such mistakes if I find them).  Rather, I will concentrate on finding and correcting typesetting mistakes like, for example, transposed or dropped characters, inconsistencies in leading (the space between lines) kerning (the space between characters), type style, size or font, and will be on the lookout for missing or repeated blocks of copy.  At this stage, there should be no "author's alterations" (which the typesetter will charge handsomely to fix); those should have been caught during the editing phase.
